Charles Dickens

Welcome to Marshall Public Library's online book group! February 7th, 2019, marks the 207th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, who is the best known English novelist. His most famous work is the story, "A Christmas Carol", which has been dramatized for the stage and screen innumerable times. Most of his novels have experienced a similar life off the page, having been adapted for film and television. Here are links to more information about him.

The first goal for the book group is for you to read (or re-read) a book by Dickens within the next month and then to post your thoughts about it, hopefully with a few choice quotes to illustrate what most drew you to it. Copies of books by Dickens can be checked out from your library or online. Copies can also be accessed for free at the gutenberg web site.  Other on-line sources that are free or very inexpensive include amazon's Dickens page and google books.

If you like film and television, go ahead and experience Dickens that way as well, but if you want to discuss it, be sure to mention identifying information about the work, such as the stars, director or producer, or the year it was made.

If you want to read the novel I'm reading, it's Bleak House.

One of the advantages of this online format for a book group is that you are not tied to a meeting date! If you finish your book before a month is up, you can comment on it as soon as you do. If it takes you a little longer than a month, no sweat, let us know what you think about it anyway.

One last thing. This format for a book group is new to us. If you have any experience with something similar and any suggestions to make, feel free!
